Boils affect different parts of the body including that of scalp, it mainly occur due to infection in hair follicles due to oil, dandruff or dust often referred to as folliculitis. Folliculitis is an infection that causes inflammation of hair follicles and the infected hair follicles are surrounded white or red eruption. 
Scalp boils widespread to form carbuncles due to transfer of bacteria mainly while combining hairs and for those having boils on scalp combing hair is really painful, because of their somewhat hidden appearance as a result of which they get knocked unknowingly.
Scalp is directly exposed to dirt and direct sunlight and is thus exposed to be infected by foreign bodies or the hair follicles get clogged due to excessive sweating or perspiration.
In some cases damage of skin texture may also lead to development of boils, as in presence of moisture and other germs staphylococci bacteria attack on scalp causing scalp boils. Untreated wounds or abrasions, friction on and forceful combining or treatment of hairs can cause lines on the scalp through which bacteria may enter the body causing boils.
The extent of boils on scalp can be lowered with the use of antibacterial soaps and shampoos. But in case of frequent outbreaks often doctors advise to go for bacterial culture for determining cause of boils and thus suggesting a solution. Besides that special attention is needed for draining them because if they are not properly drained probability of their reoccurrence is more and if they move can cause boils elsewhere on scalp. For this hot water compress can be beneficial.
