Boil or furuncle is a skin disease in which pus and dead tissue get accumulated on different areas of the body due to bacterial infection in hair follicles. Boils appear red in color, filled with pus and a yellowish or white pointed structure at the centre. Usually the person body temperature rises or drops above or below normal in severe infections of boils. It may also happen that small lumps of boils join together to form somewhat interconnected network structure of boils, called as carbuncles.
Boils can occur on any portion of the body including face, eyes, lips and even nose. Part of the body affected with boils, suffers from itching, in some cases itchiness may start occurring before lumps are formed, and is very painful. It may also smell unpleasantly because of the bacteria present in them, particularly when pus is discharged from it.
In acute cases, the multiple boils may be found on the body of the person which may also cause increase in body temperature i.e. fever and sometimes swelling of lymph nodes which can be harmful and thus proper before time treatment is needed. Frequent boils also called as chronic furunculosis, takes place due to improper treatment or due to some major infection. For this warm compresses can be applied on boil or it can be incised for draining out the bacteria containing pus.
Boils, is divided into the following 4 types depending on the causative agent or factor-
- Furuncle or carbuncle- in which an abscess occurs on the skin due to staphylococci
- Cystic acne-in it abscess is formed due to clogging of oil duct and infection, and affects deeper skin tissue
- Hidradenitis- multiple boils are formed due to inflammation of sweat glands
- Pilonidal cyst-occurs in hair follicles
In short Boils are swelling filled with pus with redness, pain and itching.
